Summary

Evidence of a 19th century kiln site at Saltney has been recorded on historic Ordnance Survey maps. The first edition 1880s map records an old kiln of unknown use and what appears to be an excavation pit south of Oak Road By the start of the 20th century the site had been substantially industrialised with the excavation of a large brick field in the southern part of the site with a narrow road or tramway leading to a series of structures to the north adjacent to the road. The structures consisted of two rectangular buildings on the site of the earlier kiln and a number of parallel lines of uncertain function. To the north of Oak Road there is an industrial site called ‘Saltney Potteries, presumably a subsidiary industry. The Ordnance Survey 3rd edition map, published in around 1910-1915 records a more industrialised site with an extensive brick field to the south and a number of large structures to the north. By the mid 20th century the brick fields appear to have fallen out of use, there is a large area of open extraction pits in the southern part of the site while to north there are only three upstanding structures, one of which still had its chimney.

Full Description

Evidence of a 19th century kiln site at Saltney has been recorded on historic Ordnance Survey maps. The first edition 1880s map records an old kiln of unknown use and what appears to be an excavation pit south of Oak Road (1)

By the start of the 20th century the site had been substantially industrialised with the excavation of a large brick field in the southern part of the site with a narrow road or tramway leading to a series of structures to the north adjacent to the road. The structures consisted of two rectangular buildings on the site of the earlier kiln and a number of parallel lines of uncertain function. To the north of Oak Road there is an industrial site called ‘Saltney Potteries (CHER 11189/2), presumably a subsidiary industry.(2)

The Ordnance Survey 3rd edition map, published in around 1910-1915 records a more industrialised site with an extensive brick field to the south and a number of large structures to the north. (3)

By the mid 20th century the brick fields appear to have fallen out of use, there is a large area of open extraction pits in the southern part of the site while to north there are only three upstanding structures, one of which still had its chimney. (4)
