Summary

Bickley Moss Cottage is a grade II listed building. It was originally two cottages and is now converted into one dwelling. It dates from 1673 but has been much altered internally. It is timber framed with brick nogging infill, (until late 20th century it was partly wattle and daub) and has a thatched roof. It is a single storey L- shaped building. The front wing has slate-roofed bay window with a thatched gabled half- dormer window above. The door is under an open gabled porch on brackets. The rear wing has three windows and a 20th century oak door. Wood was in plentiful supply as a building material in Britain until the 17th century. It was therefore the most practical material for house building. Timber framed buildings consist of a wooden framework (usually oak) that was infilled to create solid walls. Infill material used included wattle and daub, lath and plaster, brick and weather board. Brick nogging, (brick infill) was often used in the 17th and 18th centuries to replace earlier wattle and daub or lath and plaster infill as it was longer lasting.
