Full Description
Tannery marked on the Ordnance Survey 1st edition 25 inch to 1 mile - Lancashire Maps (1). Several test pits [Geo-Technical Test Pits] have been made in the area prior to development and a machine cut trench [County Council Watching Brief] have been examined. These showed that the site had around 1.5 meters of cinder based deposits. They also showed that the tanning pits and possibly other wooden structures had been preserved. Midlands Purple ware was recovered from the site (2).
