Description

Significance A mid-18th century house and landscape park, with major 19th century 'Jacobean” remodelling. There is evidence of a medieval hall, chapel, and settlement.1 The parkland, enclosed by woodland belts, is little changed, and has been held in the same family, and through marriage, since built. Standout features are three interconnecting lakes, or Pools, with 1840s bridge; gardens with ha-ha and wooded pleasure walks, veteran trees; walled former kitchen gardens; ice-house; swallow-hole sluice and sawmill. House and gardens/woodland walks are open to the public; private fishing syndicates own rights to Pools; public footpath along south side of lakes. The layers and evidence of each phase of the site's development are clearly seen. Principal Remaining Features Hall and Chapel of Holy Trinity – listed Grade II* Icehouse – listed Grade II2 Home Farmhouse and Farmbuilding – listed Grade II North Lodge leading to Home Farm – listed Grade II Gatepiers and Gates to new gardens (former kitchen garden) – listed Grade II Bridge across Middle Pool – listed Grade II Interconnecting Lakes (Lower, Lower Middle, Middle and Higher) with original dams/sluices Gardens, ha-ha, and pleasure grounds Landscape park, primarily 18C Tree belts – forming boundary woodlands Woods and Plantations Veteran trees including Sweet chestnuts and oaks Pasture Scheduled Monuments
