Description

A statement of significance and photographic record was produced for Park House, Clutton, in 2020, in advance of proposed demolition and re-development of the site. The site comprises the house with a garage to the east and extensive grounds. Park House is built in a vernacular revival style, using red sandstone for a base and half timbering details to the first floor, with a slate roof. It has been extended to the south and east. Just to the west of Park House is the site of an earlier dwelling which is depicted on the 1840 Tithe Map and listed as Plot 119, cottage croft and garden owned by John Hurleston Leche and occupied by Samuel Furmstone. The cottage shown on the tithe map fronts onto Carden Lane. The 1st edition OS map of 1876 documents that the earlier cottage has been demolished and a new house built further east, away from Carden Lane. An entrance drive is depicted running roughly east-west from Carden Lane to the new house. By 1898 there is no change to the outline of the house but, by 1911, the house has again been demolished and a further new house constructed. The plot also appears to have expanded to the east with a new small ancillary building present. The study concludes that Park House is not particularly old, dating to the early twentieth century, and is not a rare example of its building type. Due to the extent of alterations and large extensions to all elevations, the architectural and historic integrity of the house has been lost. There is sufficient evidence to assess that Park House does not meet the criteria to be considered a non-designated heritage asset. (1)
