Description

A programme of archaeological mitigation was undertaken at 74 Greenall’s Avenue, Warrington, following the excavation of a trench in the back garden of the property which revealed a potential buried soil horizon. The archaeological work was undertaken on one day, 12th August 2020, and comprised the recording of an exposed area of excavation within the garden. The mitigation works recorded a dark earth layer in Trench 1 containing fragments of white sandy lime mortar, heavily abraded fragmented ceramic building material inclusions, also, three sherds of Romano-British pottery. This probably represents a Romano-British occupation deposit that potentially related to the known Roman settlement of Wilderspool (SM No. 1006769). In Trench 2 a levelling deposit containing red sandstone fragements, is also thought indicative of Roman activity. The extent of the settlement area is broadly thought to extend across the south of Warrington in the vicinity of Greenall’s Avenue, to the south of the River Mersey. The Wilderspool Roman settlement has been previously recorded 100m to the east during the construction of a supermarket, also on Greenall’s Avenue. (1)
