Description
A desk-based assessment was produced in 2020 for land at Number 1, White Lion Cottages, Radway Green Road, Barthomley. The cottages are of seventeenth century date and the historic mapping indicates another potential building existed on site until the late nineteenth century. The dwelling was originally located within the current site, north of the White Lion Inn. This building is shown on the 1836 Tithe Map, which shows the two plots, Plot no. 386 and 385, as both being owned by Lord Crewe and in use as dwellings. The White Lion Cottages was occupied by Thomas Bebbington as a house, shop, garden and croft (Plot 385) whilst the second, demolished building, is described as occupied by James Bradshaw, and a house in two dwellings, garden and orchard.
