Description
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken in February 2018 during groundworks associated with a street landscaping project, Pierpoint Lane Pocket Park, aimed at improving the appearance of Pierpoint Lane and to create a small, local amenity. The groundworks revealed that the eastern half of the site had been heavily disturbed by the insertion of a brick-walled, subterranean structure, probably a basement. This structure can be related to a long building stretching back from the Bridge Street frontage and depicted on Ordnance Survey mappping dating to the late nineteenth century. Elsewhere, the ground level was raised, or the new surfacing added avoided any disturbance to below ground deposits. No significant archaeological remains or deposits were encountered. (1)
