Site Event/Activity record ECH6507 - 67-69 Bridge Street Row, Chester, Cheshire: An Archaeological Evaluation

An archaeological evaluation was undertaken during February 2018 ahead of the proposed demolition and replacement of an extension to the rear of nos. 67–69 Bridge Street Row, Chester (centring on NGR SJ 40591 66126). The proposed development site lies within Chester’s Area of Archaeological Importance and the property is a Grade II listed building. The site is located within one of Chester’s primary archaeological zones within the Roman legionary fortress and the remains of the legionary baths complex lie close by. A single trial trench was excavated within the footprint of the proposed extension. The results of the evaluation demonstrated that a cobblestone surface – probably the remains of the Roman intervallum road, or via sagularis – lie beneath deep soil deposits and later structural features immediately adjacent to the current extension. The remains of the road are considered to be of archaeological significance and will require preservation in situ should the development take place. (1)
