Description

Newton Hall appears to be a typical seventeenth century cross-passage plan house in that it is constructed in brick with gables and some surviving mullioned windows, but the extensive alterations carried out in the late nineteenth century make it appear more like a Victorian villa, with the white-painted render and bargeboards. Important timber-framing, which may relate to an earlier house, is visible internally. The chief aspects of significance are: * Evidence of residential use of the site for at least 270 years. * Historic associations with the regionally important Newton family and the locally important Mallory family; * Vernacular and designed architectural styles in locally-sourced materials; * The survival of 17th century timber-framing, structural beams, fireplaces and wrought-iron casement windows.
