Description
Archaeological watching brief undertaken in 2015 at Chester City Baths during the construction of ten lightning conductor pits. The site lies within the zone of primary archaeological character in the Chester Archaeological plan.
Ten pits were dug with a maximum size of 1 m square and to a maximum depth of 0.7m. The results of the archaeological watching brief exposes modern layers of construction and build up associated with the current pavement and amenities, as well as construction cuts for the 20th century extensions. A possible relic soil was expose to the west of the building relating to the 19th century park and terrace houses on Union Street. No deposits pre date the 18th to 19th century. Artefacts recovered were predominately post medieval but a single 13th - 14th century body sherd and a 1st - 3rd century Roman mortaria rim sherd were recovered.
