Description

Following the initial discovery of the amphitheatre (ECH4974) in 1929 at Site 1 and its subsequent excavations of Sites 2 to 5 in 1930-1931 ECH3238), four further sites were excavated in 1934 (ECH5639). These sites included two deliberate explorations by the Archaeological Society and two phases of construction work by the city authority Site 7: Excavations for an electric cable laid down in May 1934, across the site of the amphitheatre, in line with the north face of the boundary wall for the Ursiline Convent. The western edge of this trench was excavated through the make-up of the seating bank. Site 8: Two ARP shelters were constructed at the site in 1939 Site 9: monitoring during the construction of a footpath Site 10: investigations in the cellar of St John's House (1)
