Description

An archaeological trial trench was excavated in 2012 on the site of a new residential development at Burnside, Heath Lane, Willaston. The archaeological interest of the site lies in its position on the projected route of a Roman road that has been traced running from the legionary fortress at Chester along the length of Wirral towards Meols. Excavation of the trench demonstrated that the natural boulder clay geology lies at a shallow depth beneath a thin covering of topsoil. There was no evidence for a metalled surface, foundation material or adaptation of the area for road construction. A potential boundary ditch or gully was located, aligned roughly north-west to south-east, and parallel to Heath Lane; the gully corresponds to a field boundary shown on the nineteenth and early twentieth OS maps.
