Description

Excavation carried out primarily to obtain information about the layout of the Roman First Cohort barracks. The site also uncovered evidence for late Saxon activity in the area however. The earliest detectable post Roman feature was a large pit which had been excavated through the Roman barrack buildings at a depth of 2.45m, two semi-sunken huts were also recorded. Dating was very limited with a few isolated sherds of Chester Ware (1).
