Description

Site observations during the mechanical excavation of the footings for Goldsmith House in 1972 (by TE Ward) revealed a number of rock-cut medieval pits. Information supplementary to that of the 1970 - 1971 excavations concerning Roman occupation at the site indicated that there was a further barrack block to the west of the previously excavated site (1). During what appears to have been part of the same construction work, but while excavating for a cable trench immediately north of where the building would stand, a small group of either medieval or post-medieval pottery was also recovered (2).
