Description

Reconstruction of the southern part of Northgate St., between its junction with St Werburgh St. and the Cross, between 1984 and 1985 confirmed the symmetry of the known Principia, its south eastern corner and internal partitions having survived to within 0.3m of the modern surface (1). The work also established that the east side of the Principia lay to the east side of Northgate St. A late seventeenth century pit containing pottery and clay pipe fragments was also recorded (1), in addition to possible Saxon rubbish deposits and evidence of stone robbing.
