Description

In May 1983 several post pits were dug immediately outside the eastern side of the city walls in Chester, c80m south of the King Charles Tower for the insertion of new steps for access to the wall (1). Archaeological surveillance showed that this particular stretch of the walls is of a modern build down to and below the present ground surface and was almost certainly built in the last 200 years. The pits yielded a considerable amount of dressed Roman masonry which did not appear to have come from the wall (1).
