Description

Subsequent excavations of the nave and south transept during the installation of underfloor heating. A sandstone coffin was recorded however it had been damaged (2) Excavation across the entire floor was carried out but restricted to a depth of 0.3m. A complex structural sequence was revealed including possible remains of a Saxon church, sleeper walls for the Norman abbey and the foundations of the present late medieval church. Small areas of ancient floors, numerous burials and the foundation of the rood screen were found. A large number of displaced medieval decorated floor tiles were also recovered. (3)
