Description

During March 2011, in preparation for a new canopy shelter to be erected within Chester Racecourse, a series of five pits providing anchor points for the canopy structure were excavated. Four pits revealed a similar sequence of deposits; naturally deposited alluvial silts were noted towards the base of each pit, underlying a thin layer of charcoal-flecked sediment, which, in Pit 1, contained one piece of medieval pottery. Pit 3 can be characterised as containing modern disturbance.
