Description

Foundation trench for house extension excavted to a depth of 0.3m measuring 5.50m X 5.50m on west side of house. Highly disturbed top soil contained brocken clear glass C19th bottles, ginger ware and blue/white pottery, small fragments of orange brick (< 5cm²) and charcoal fragments (< 5%). Troweling of top soil revealed sandstone wall foundations parallel to the current west end of the house, 5m distant. The wall foundation was also perpendicular too the still standing E - West garden wall, indicating that the wall possibly stood to a height of circa 8ft. An additional sandstone wall foundation was located 3.5m along the above wall foundation i.e. running perpendicularly back towards the house for a distance of 2m. This wall foundation was also 50cm wide. The two wall foundations' probably represent the remains of walls / internal divisions of buildings visible on the C19th century O.S. mapping. A butchered bone (cattle?) (20cm X 11cm) was also found in the utility trench to the north of the extension. The utility trench was dug to a depth of 1m and contained dark garden soil.
