Description
This report describes a programme of trial trenching conducted in advance of construction of a proposed car park for a park-and-ride scheme. The trenches were designed to investigate a scatter of Roman pottery found on the surface of ploughed land within the boundaries of the proposed development.
The trenches found a number of shallow ditches. There is strong circumstantial evidence which suggests that these ditches date to the Roman occupation of the area and probably defined a series of enclosures. Although it has not been possible to demonstrate the enclosures' function they are likely to be either part of a group of practice camps constructed by the Roman army, or relate to the contemporary agricultural organisation of the area.
