Description

The trench yielded clear evidence of Roman archaeology surviving at a level of about one metre below the modern ground surface. Deposits consistent with rampart material of the legionary fortress were recorded in the lower part of the trench. These deposits have clearly been severely truncated in this part of the site and particularly towards St Martin's Way where modern deposits penetrate to the bottom of the trench.
