Description
An archaeological excavation was undertaken at 47-57 Eastgate Street, Chester, between the 6th and the 21st August 2006. A single trench, 2.6m x 2.9m was excavated. The trench was filled with late 20th century backfill within a red brick walled cellar, with the brick floor of the cellar marking the base of the trench. To the north of the trench, the brick floor was absent, revealing a natural sand deposit overlying sandstone bedrock. No archaeological features predating the cellars were identified and it is likely that any archaeological deposits that may have been present would have been destroyed during the construction of the cellars.
