Description

Evaluation in advance of redevelopment proposals at 21-31 Newgate Row. Two trenches were excavated and the results indicate truncated but significant and multi-phased archaeology survives close to the present ground level. The well-preserved remains of a Roman roadside drain were recorded, together with surviving masonry from a probable military barrack block. Two medieval pits whose fills were rich in finds and palaeenvironmental potential were also observed.
