Description
This event represents the first phase of archaeological investigation at the Roman settlement at Heronbridge, Chester, excavations which took place in 2002. Four areas were excavated, concentrating on that part of the site between Eaton Rd. and the River Dee. Trenches I and II were positioned to test for the presence of any features closing off the side of the earthwork enclosure along the river; no such features were found. Trench IV transected the northern arm of the earthwork enclosure. Trench III was situated on the edge of the ancient river cliff, it was in this area that three burials were found. A geophysical survey of significant portions of the interior of the earthwork enclosure was also carried out, and identified several potentially significant features.
