Description

Report contains the results of a programme of desk top appraisal, building recording and archaeological monitoring during preliminary ground disturbance associated with the redevelopment of the former Engineering Company Works. Modifications to the building foundations resulted in minimal ground disturbance during the preliminary construction groundwork's. However the watching brief during the excavation of the lift pits and the main north-south drain trench gave the opportunity to examine quickly the sub-surface stratigraphy. Although no features or deposits of obvious archaeological potential were noted, the identification of widespread ploughsoils over the western part of the site indicate a lack of modern disturbance and augurs well for the survival of any deeper archaeological features.
