Description

An archaeological evaluation was conducted by the University of Manchester Archaeological Unit (UMAU) of land south of Ledsham Road Great Sutton, Ellesmere Port. Cheshire (centred NGR S1 366 763). This assessment was undertaken on behalf of Redrow Homes and carried out according to a brief designed by UMAU following consultation with the Cheshire County Council Planning Service Archaeological Officer. The site covers approximately 18 hectares and is part of a proposal for a residential housing development. The evaluation consisted of a field walking and metal detecting survey, a geophysical survey and a programme of trial trenching. The field walking and metal detecting surveys recorded material evidence predominantly from the post-medieval period. The geophysical survey produced results showing the presence of regular sub-surface anomalies. A programme of trenching was subsequently undertaken to target areas of archaeological potential identified in the initial findings. The excavation produced very little evidence to suggest occupation or focused human activity up to the late post-medieval period in the areas covered by this evaluation.
