Description

Evaluation carried out in advance of development proposals on land at New Crane Street adjacent to the Roodee Racecourse. Three evaluation trenches were excavated while a further three geotechnical borehole pits were observed. The results of the evaluation demonstrate that the site contains the preserved remains of post medieval housing. These remains supersede a sequence of deposits resulting from the deliberate dumping of material in the area from the mid seventeenth century onwards. This dumping was undertaken in order to raise the level of the land above the inundations of the tidal estuary of the former course of the river Dee. Organic rich deposits were identified at 3.5m - 4m below the current ground surface.
