Description
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken, in December 2001- January 2002, during the demolition of four 1940s bick houses at Stanlow Point. The site lies immediately south of the farmyard which replaced Stanlow Abbey, a Cistercian Abbey and later grange farm dating to the early twelfth century. The southern boundary of the farmyard lies 12m to the north of the rear wall of the 1940s houses. However, no archaeological remains of the abbey complex were observed. (1)
Personal Communication from S.Aisworth: In Section 2.2 of the report (R2405, source 1) there is the following statement:-
" An engraving of the farm buildings in about 1730 by J Strutt [reproduced as Figure 4 in this report] shows the condition of the medieval remains and part of the later 18th century farm buildings (Hulbert 1838, 45)"
The engraving referred to is of the grange buildings at Ince Manor and NOT Stanlow Abbey. The engraving appears to be a Buck engraving of 1727 which describes the location in as "near this place are the small remains of Stanlow Abbey….". This may have been the source of the error. (2)
