Description

Excavations in Goss Street in 1971 on the site of Messrs Aston & Son Ltd (GS71). Significant damage to earlier archaeology had been done in the post-medieval period with the addition of cellars in the area. Excavation noted several phases of construction on the site. TI: Two early structural phases in timber and a later phase with sandstone rubble foundations set in mortar. TII: single timber phase followed by a later stone structural phase with facing plaster, with significant truncation by later medieval pit digging. At least three Roman floor levels were recorded however (1) The timber structure has been interpreted as a Flavian principia, later rebuilt in timber with a second adjacent structure added. By the 2nd century both timber structures had been replaced in stone (2). All the Roman deposits were cut by medieval pits (3).
