Description

A trial trench excavated behind No 47 High Street (1-3 Hospital Street), Nantwich in 1975 produced quantities of medieval pottery, bone and timber. Natural sand was overlain by 2.85m of artificial build up. Nothing earlier than circa 1200 was found. All the pottery appeared to date to the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries, with the exception of one 18th century sherd from a pit. Structures identified appear to be wooden fences dating to the the 13th-14th centuries, which were replaced by two phases of stone walling, possibly representing outhouses, the earlier being robbed out in the 15th century. The post medieval stratigraphy had been completely removed and there was no trace of the 1583 fire.
