Description

Working Men’s Club LL16 (Previously LL EP/11) Address: Cromwell Road, Ellesmere Port Architect: Possibly Sir G Gilbert Scott Date: c1925 Description A large 2 storey pitched roof building of red brick and York stone. Classically detailed in the “English Renaissance” style reminiscent of Sir Christopher Wren’s secular work at the Kensington Palace Orangery (1704)*. Italianate niches with art nouveau influences to two gables, elaborate window heads and key stones. The window frames recall the design of the red “K4” phone box by Sir G Gilbert Scott who did a lot of work for the Post Office hence the speculative attribution of him as architect.
