Description

CHESTER CITY (IM) SJ4066SW UNION PLACE 595-1/3/379 (West side) Nos.2, 4 AND 6 GV II Row of alley houses, truncated to 3, then partly converted to a Catholic Club, now a hostel for the homeless. Probably 1830s. 3 storeys, now 3 bays. Brown brick in Flemish bond to front and English garden wall bond to rear; adjoins property facing Grosvenor Street, south; rebuilt north end in stretcher bond; grey slate roof. Sandstone plinth; No.2 has doorcase with plain pilasters, frieze and cornice; Nos 4 & 6 have plain replaced doorways with doors of 2 flush panels and 2 replaced panels. Recessed sashes with painted stone sills and, except for third storey, wedge lintels with cambered soffits. The first storey has a 16-pane sash to No.2, a blank face to No.4 and a 12-pane sash to No.6; the second storey has two 16-pane sashes to No.2, a 16-pane sash above the door of No.4, a 12-pane sash and a 16-pane sash to No.6; the third storey has shorter sashes, 3 of 12-panes, one of 9 panes and one of 12 panes. The rear, partly covered, has recessed small-pane sashes. Plain painted stone eaves-coping. INTERIORS are altered. Nos 2-6 Union Place and 1, 3 & 5 Cuppin Street (qv) formed parts of the same development. Listing NGR: SJ4046566015
