Description

CHESTER CITY (IM) SJ4066SW UNION PLACE 595-1/3/378 (East side) Nos.1-7 (Odd) GV II 4 alley houses, now used by restaurant and office Nos 14 & 16 Grosvenor Street (qv). Probably 1830s. Brown brick in Flemish bond to front and English garden wall bond to ends; hipped grey slate roof. 3 storeys, each former house of one bay. Painted sandstone plinth; one sandstone step to each door; doorcases with simple pilasters, friezes and cornices; doors of 6 flush panels to Nos 1,5 & 7, replaced 6-panel door to No.3; recessed sashes with painted stone sills and, except in third storey, wedge lintels with cambered soffits, of 16 panes to first and second storey and, shorter, 12 panes to third storey; cast-iron rainwater pipes and heads; plain sandstone eaves coping; 2 ridge chimneys. A rare survival of alley housing, converted without significant external alteration. INTERIORS: altered. Nos 1-7 Union Place and Nos 1,3 & 5 Cuppin Street (qv) formed part of the same development.
