CHESTER CITY (IM) SJ4066SE 595-1/4/155 EASTGATE STREET AND ROW (North side) No.17A Street and No.11 Row GV II Undercroft and town house redeveloped as street-level shop, Row shop and accommodation. Medieval, largely replaced c1800 and mid C20. Brick and sandstone; roof concealed. EXTERIOR: 4 storeys of one bay. Modern shopfronts of no interest; 12 sandstone steps to Row, east; C20 mild steel railing to Row front; end-piers refaced in C20 brickwork; modern coverings to sloping stallboard 2.4m from front to rear and to Row walk; modern small-pane shopfront to Row of no interest; plastered ceiling to stallboard and Row walk. The late Georgian front to the third and fourth storeys is faced with a mid C20 outer leaf in stretcher bond, containing 2 recessed 12-pane horned sashes to each storey with sash-boxes partly exposed; concrete sills and coping; slightly cambered brick window-heads. The party wall between the rear yard of this item and the yard of the Boot Inn is partly of medieval sandstone masonry, marking the boundary of the burgage plot, the most interesting feature of this item. INTERIOR: Street and Row levels have no visible features of special interest. The dogleg open-string stair, flights parallel with front, is c1800 with shaped brackets, turned newel and stick balusters. The third storey has a cornice and a blocked fireplace, the fourth storey a C18 strutted truss with a C17 oak reused tie-beam.
