Description

CHESTER CITY (IM) SJ4066SE EASTGATE STREET AND ROW 595-1/4/170 (South side) No.6 Street and No.4 Row GV II Undercroft and town house, rebuilt as undercroft shop, Row shop and accommodation. Probably 1830s. Red sandstone and brown brick; hipped grey slate roof, ridge at right-angle to front. 4 storeys of one bay, including undercroft and Row. Modern shopfront to street; 7 repaired sandstone steps to Row walk; red sandstone end-piers through undercroft and Row storeys. Ornate cast-iron Row-front railing; sloped and stepped diagonally boarded stallboard 1.6m from front to back; boarded Row walk; modern shopfront; the capitals of the end-piers, of Classical derivation, support coved stone brackets to the bressumer; plaster ceiling with soffits of joists exposed. The Row-top bressumer is covered. The third storey has a pair of Edwardian square 4-light oriels with patterned lead glazing above transoms, separated by a basket arch, all of painted timber, with base-beams, friezes and cornices. The fourth storey has 2 cross-windows with painted stone sills and wedge lintels; moulded stringcourse; 2 brick courses; moulded cornice and parapet course of painted brick; lateral chimney, east. INTERIOR: the restaurant at undercroft and Row levels has been lined. Listing NGR: SJ4054666273
