CHESTER CITY (IM) SJ4065NE DUKE STREET 595-1/6/147 (South side) 10/01/72 No.4 GV II Town house. Earliest visible features probably C17, altered C18 and internally C20. Brown brick, Flemish bond to front; grey slate roof, ridge parallel with front. EXTERIOR: cellar and 3 storeys, double fronted with 2 windows to each storey. 2 stone apron steps and one repaired flush step to replaced 4-panel door and overlight with repaired flat hood on 2 shaped brackets. Flush sashes with lead apron sills and gauged brick cambered heads, of 16 panes to first and second storeys and 12 panes in 8 and 4-pane leafs to third storey. A 3-course floor band to each upper storey. Parapet on band of one course oversailing 2 courses; moulded stone cornice; old brick chimney on west gable and chimney rebuilt above ridge level on east gable. Unbroken vertical joints at centre and near ends of second and third storeys suggest fenestration replaced by present mid C18 sashes. Rear windows renewed. INTERIOR: rock-cut and brick cellar has some close studding in east wall. First-storey front room has early C18 panelling, one row beneath dado rail and a tall row above it; remnant of round archway to rear; rear west room has corner fireplace; former inglenook with oak bressumer; corner fireplaces with C19 cast-iron grates upstairs.
