Girls school. 1881-83. By EA Ould. Brown brick with red terracotta and stone dressings; red clay-tile roofs. Later portions of the school buildings are not included in this item. L-shaped; the south wing facing City Walls Road contains the school hall, the north wing facing Bedward Row has dining hall and kitchen in the first storey with smaller rooms above. EXTERIOR: the west face has the gable of 2 storeys and attic to the cross-wing and the main face of the school hall, all in a richly-detailed Vernacular Revival manner, with leaded windows mullioned in terracotta and transomed in stone, shaped chimneys and an ornate steepled belfry. The hall has 3 windows under stone-coped gables and, in the manner of the bay of a Tudor hall, a crenellated projection with a 4-light window to the hall and a 3-light window above; a terracotta figure of Queen Victoria; a corbelled tourelle with tiled spire. The north face to Bedward Row has a round-topped framed and boarded door in a projecting bay; 5 horned sashes to the dining-hall with glazing-bars removed from the lower leaves; 5 recessed horned sashes to rooms above the dining hall; a 3-light wood mullioned and transomed window above the door with a 3-light leaded dormer casement above. The east face of the school hall has a roof sweeping down over a cloister of 3 arched brick bays with terracotta medallions in the spandrels. INTERIOR: the school hall is open to the roof, with 3 arch-braced trusses on massive posts, 3 dormer-gables to west, purlins, valley-beams and rafters; inserted gallery.
