CHESTER CITY (IM) SJ4066SE BRIDGE STREET AND ROW 595-1/4/77 (East side) 10/01/72 No.57 Street and Nos.63 & 65 Row (Formerly Listed as: BRIDGE STREET No 57 Street & Nos 63 & 65 Row) GV II* Undercroft and town house, then undercroft shop, Row shop and accommodation now used as storage. Medieval, not closely dateable; C17, early C19 and C20. Sandstone, some timber framing, brick; the roof is not visible. EXTERIOR: 4 storeys including undercroft and Row; one bay. Mid C20 shopfront to street in simplified early C20 manner; 11 sandstone steps to Row, 4 repaired. Cast-iron railing to Row front and return has circlets in double bottom rail, stick balusters and a castellated pattern between paired top rails; timber-cased end-posts and a cast-iron Roman Doric central column; covered sloped stallboard 2.21m from front to back; flagged Row walk; the simple shopfront has an added security blind to entrance; plaster ceiling; the Row-top bressumer behind timber fascia and cornice has Flemish bond brown brickwork with pale headers above. 2 recessed sashes to each upper storey, now of 4 panes, have painted stone sills and wedge lintels; a full cornice and low parapet of painted stone. INTERIOR: the undercroft shop has surfaces covered; the cross-beams are boxed; from the back a sandstone passage leads to a medieval rear undercroft 3.7m wide and 3.47m front to back; the west wall is the former rear wall of the medieval front undercroft, with masonry visible south of the doorway; a cupboard recess in the west wall; a roughly chamfered oak beam against the north wall is probably C17. The Row shop is lined, but with doorway to the south passage which has a stop-chamfered cross-beam and other indications of C17 timber framing. A dogleg stair to the third storey has closed string, turned newel and stick balusters. The chamber above the Row has a substantial skirting, dado rail, 2 panels beneath each window, splayed jambs and broad architraves, a probably cast-iron painted fireplace with Corinthian-derived fluted pilasters and frieze beneath mantel of vine leaves in seven round-arched panels; the ceiling has a plaster cornice above a simple frieze; a plaster rose. The second and third rooms have 6-panel doors; the third room has a simple Classical timber corner fireplace, a 2-panel door on H hinges to a small cupboard with architraves and a larger cupboard with door of 3 broad boards; a panel of wattle is displayed in the passage wall; a closet cupboard. The fourth room has a door of 4 fielded panels on HL hinges, a round-arched cast-iron grate in a C19 wood fireplace with stop-chamfered pilasters carrying a moulded mantel on acanthus brackets. The back room could not be inspected. A closed-string dogleg stair to the fourth storey has turned newels, 2 stick balusters per step and swept rail. The front room, now divided, has a 4-panel door and a simple corner fireplace in the south part. The second room has no features; the third room has a 6-panel door, a cupboard door of 3 broad boards and a 16-pane flush sash; the door to the back wing is later C19, with 3;2;3;2 panels. the back room has a 6-panel door and a flush sash.
