Description

CHESTER CITY (EM) SJ4165 VICTORIA PATHWAY 1932-1/8/292 (West side) 21/07/95 Nos.12 AND 14 GV II Pair of cottages. c1855. Probably by James Harrison, said to have been for the second Marquis of Westminster. Flemish bond brown brick with steep grey slate roofs. 2 storeys of 2 bays plus a recessed porch bay on each end; some alterations. Plinth; 4-panel door, now part-glazed, with fanlight in round brick arch; canted bay window with flush sashes of 4, 8 and 4 panes with painted stone sills, frieze and cornice to hipped slate roof with lead rolls; a similar bay window but with glazing bars removed; glazed C20 porch with door of 4 panes above 1 panel, 6-pane sidelights, glazed side and roof. First floor has, in front-gabled main bays, a 16-pane recessed sash to No.14 and a horned sash with no bars to No.12; exposed purlins; bargeboards; finials; central ridge chimneys. The left side of No.14 has recessed 12-pane sashes with painted stone sills and gauged brick flat arches, 3 to ground floor and 2 to first floor. The right side is similar, but with no glazing bars to ground floor or first floor and 12-pane recessed attic sash. The rear has walled yards; a recessed sash, bars removed, to No.12 and a 20-pane sash to No.14. INTERIORS not inspected. With Nos 2-10, 16 & 18 and 3-17 Victoria Pathway (qv), this item comprises an unusual example of mid C19 town planning analogous to mid C20 Radburn layouts with a footpath serving the fronts of the cottages and vehicular streets their rear.
