Description

CHESTER CITY (EM) SJ4165 VICTORIA PATHWAY 1932-1/8/294 (East side) 21/07/95 Nos.3 AND 5 GV II Pair of cottages. 1852. Probably by James Harrison. Flemish bond brown brick with graded grey slate roof. 2 storeys with a pair of front-gabled bays flanked by porch bays. Plinth. Replaced 12-pane sash far left; stone step to 4-panel door with 3-pane radial-bar fanlight in round brick arch; a canted bay window to each cottage with painted stone sill and 3;6;3-pane sashes; blocked window in flank of main bay; replaced half-glazed 4-panel door with blocked fanlight. The first floor has a 16-pane sash to the front bedroom of each cottage. Fenestration of left end probably replaced; right end has 3 recessed 12-pane sashes to each floor; all sashes have painted stone sills and gauged-brick flat arches. The rear has alterations at ground floor level; two 16-pane sashes under dormer gables . INTERIORS not inspected. With Nos 2-18 and 7-17 Victoria Pathway (qv) this item comprises an unusual example of mid C19 suburban planning analogous to mid C20 Radburn layouts with a footpath serving the fronts of the cottages and vehicular streets at their rear.
