Description

CHESTER CITY (EM) SJ4066 1932-1/6/278 UPPER NORTHGATE STREET (West side) Nos.5 AND 7 GV II Pair of town houses, now offices. Probably late C18. Flemish bond brown brick; grey slate roof, ridge parallel with front. 3 storeys of 4 windows. Painted stone plinth; 2 stone steps to adjacent round-arched doorways; No.5 has door of 4 fielded panels above 2 flush panels and radial-bar fanlight in case with recessed fluted pillars and ornamented architrave to round arch; No.7 has 9-panel door in archway rebuilt late C19. Painted stone bands to ground and first floors and sills to third floor; wedge lintels; replaced horned 2-pane sashes; 2 to each side of doors; 4 to first and second floors, almost equally spaced. Central rainwater pipe; modillion cornice; central ridge chimney. The rear has replaced almost flush 2-pane sashes. INTERIORS: No.5 has 6-panel door and cornice in ground floor and first floor front rooms; stair to first floor renewed; dogleg stair with 7 winders in semicircle at the turn; square newels with shaped tops; 3 stick balusters per step; swept rail; L-shaped stair to attic; door of 2 fielded panels. No.7 has brick barrel-vaulted cellar of 2 chambers; cornices to ground floor; upper floors could not be inspected. Listing NGR: SJ4037866750
