CHESTER CITY (EM) SJ4066 ST JOHN STREET 1932-1/6/249 (West side) No.12 GV II Includes: Fragment of Deva Roman Fortress wall ST JOHN STREET. Showrooms, perhaps formerly workshop and offices. 1908. Hard red brick with terracotta dressings. EXTERIOR: cellars, 2 storeys and attic; almost symmetrical, 9 windows. Yellow sandstone plinth with blocked cellar openings. Left wing has round-arched cartway, a bull's-eye window and a 12-pane recessed sash; projecting central portion has a further-projecting central bay of two 15-pane sashes, with a similar sash to each side; the right wing has a 12-pane recessed sash and one step to 6-panel door in case with pediment on consoles. All windows have architraves shouldered and eared and usually cornices of terracotta. The first floor has 3 recessed 12-pane sashes in left wing, 4 similar sashes in central portion, the right wing a 12-pane sash and a dual 8-pane sash. Egg-and-dart cornice to each wing; central portion has modillion cornice with a broken pediment above the 2 central windows, dated 1908 on cartouche with swags. The left wing has coped end-gable with flush brick chimney. The middle portion has hipped mansard with 2 Classically detailed dormers and a rectangular roof-lantern. The right wing has a smaller lantern behind the front pitch. The foundation courses of the Roman fortress wall are visible in area, left, continuing into cellar. INTERIOR has cast-iron columns and panelled ceiling. Substantial stair. This item has townscape value on site facing the Roman amphitheatre. Listing NGR: SJ4077266179
