Bank, now offices. 1892. By TM Lockwood. For the Liverpool Union Bank, later Williams Deacons Bank. Yellow sandstone ashlar; orange clay tile roof. Late C16 Baroque manner. EXTERIOR: cellars, 3 storeys and attic; 3 window-bays to each street. Canted corner has pair of tourelles with cupola roofs of copper; sillbands and floor-strings. To City Road pair of 6-panel hardwood doors with 3-pane fanlight, carved frieze and pediment with armorial shield; a round-arched window with 2 panes below impost and 8 in fan; a similar window to canted corner, sill slopping down towards Boughton; 3 similar windows to Boughton. The first floor has a 2-light mullioned window left of door, a pedimented mullioned and transomed 3-light window above doorway, transom round-arched in central light; a cross-window and canted corner with a small window in ornate case on tourelle to each side; the face to Boughton has a 3-light window as that over doorway, with a cross-casement to each side. The second floor has a mullioned 2-light window and a 4-light window to City Road; a 2-light mullioned window, glazing slightly altered, on the corner plus a small window in each tourelle; a 3-light mullioned window to each side of a 4-light window to Boughton. The roof is hipped to the canted corner. The tourelles are capped by belvederes with Doric columns supporting the cupola roofs. The face to each street has a round window in an ornate case in a pedimented gable; balustrades between cupolas and from cupolas to gables. A central ashlar chimney. Hipped roof to right end-gable, with ashlar chimney. The left end has a shaped gable having a 2-light window. Glazing to all upper storey windows is leaded. Screen wall to yard, left, has boarded door. INTERIOR: surfaces in ground floor rooms are covered. Upper storeys not inspected.
