House and adjoining warehouse. c1830 and c1870. Probably for the Shropshire Union Canal Company. English garden wall bond brown brick and Flemish bond red brick; grey slate roofs. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; double-fronted 1870s front wing, stone-dressed, with older parallel rear wing and long workshop wing, right. Symmetrical house front with canted corners has stone-capped plinth; apron step to door of 4 fielded panels and 1-pane fanlight in round-arched opening with flush stone quoins; painted stone sills and chamfered lintels; a tripartite 2;2;2 pane sash to each side of doorway and a 2-pane sash in each canted corner; the first floor has 2 pairs of 2-pane sashes to front and a sash to each corner; cornice and 1-course stone parapet; roof hipped to street. The workshop wing has large inserted vehicular doors, boarded and part-glazed; small-pane windows with stone sills and segmental gauged brick heads; hipped roof; lean-to outshut, south. East end of house to street has unbroken brick joint between front and rear wings. The rear has 6-panel door with segmental arch. Tudor-arched brick window openings have painted stone sills and Gothick iron casements with reticulated tracery: 2 windows south of door and one north of door; 2 windows to first floor. INTERIOR: panelled dados; 2 fireplaces, one with slender pillared overmantel. Stair with open string, shaped brackets, shaped newel and cast-iron balusters c1870; exposed beams and joists. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: cast-iron corner post, gate and garden railing to street have cross-braced bottom rail and lock-rail and double top rail with roundels; spears and acanthus finials.
