Description

CHESTER CITY (EM) SJ4166 BOUGHTON, Barrel Well Hill 1932-1/6/7 (South West side) No.160 Barrel Well House GV II Detached house, now with flats. c1840. Brick, now pebbledashed; slate roof. 2 storeys to entrance front, 3 to garden; 7 windows. Flush end-gable chimneys and one ridge chimney towards right. The north-east, entrance, front has a projecting central wing. Door of 6 tall, narrow fielded panels in substantial case with pilasters and entablature; altered fenestration includes several flush 12-pane sashes with rendered architraves. The south-west garden face, prominent from the Dee and meadows beyond, has verandah to ground floor and continuous balcony under hipped canopy to first floor, on slender columns. The wall-face behind verandah has some alterations; probably formerly with central French window and three 12-pane sashes to each side, now replaced 1-pane glazed door with 12-pane margined window in small projection left with 2 sashes to left and 3 to right of door. The first floor has 7 full-height 15-pane sashes with architraves; fretted segmental-arched heads to front of balcony; simple railings. Sillband and seven 12-pane sashes to second floor. INTERIORS not inspected. This building was probably formed from 2 detached mid C19 houses united and remodelled later C19. (Ordnance Survey: 1:2500 Plan of Chester, 1st Edition: 1875-).
