Description

CHESTER CITY (EM) SJ4166 BOUGHTON, Barrel Well Hill 1932-1/6/6 (South West side) No.158 Chester House, garden chambers and wall II Detached riverside house, parsonage to St Paul's Church (qv) in 1875. c1830. Stucco on brick; grey slate hipped roof. 2 storeys, double-fronted. The almost symmetrical entrance front, north-east, has 4-panel door, the lower panels flush, in pedimented, pilastered timber doorcase in the slightly projecting central bay; a recessed 12-pane sash in left wing; recessed panel in place of sash to right wing; painted stone sills. First-floor sillband; 4;12;4-pane tripartite sash above door; recessed panel in place of sash in each wing; broken pediment gable to central bay; a broad, symmetrically-placed longitudinal chimney at each end of ridge. The garden front is altered, with added verandah and enclosed glazed balcony and a small added wing, south-east. Three 30-pane windows to ground floor, below ground level on entrance front; 3 recessed 9-pane sashes to second floor. INTERIORS not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: the garden contains a range of 3 long and narrow barrel-vaulted subterranean chambers of brick, repaired and strengthened internally, apparently intended for boathouses or store-rooms.
