SJ 46 NE TARVIN C.P. HOLME STREET (South Side) 2/71 Holme Street Hall. 22/10/1952 II Large farmhouse: early C17, late C18 extensions to rear, some late C19 alterations. Irregular bond red brick with buff sandstone dressings, Welsh slate roof, 2 massive lateral brick chimneys. 3-storey symmetrical 3-bay front. Stone plinth, flush stone quoins, moulded band at 1st floor which rises to form hood moulds over the windows. End bays have deepened 3-light stone mullioned windows containing plain sashes below, rebated chamfered 5-light stone mullioned windows with flat hood at 1st floor, and rebated chamfered 3-light mullioned window in top storey. Central projecting gabled 2-storey porch has coping, kneelers and mace finials. Late C19 doorcase with chamfered lintel and half-glazed door. 2-light window above and stone surround to plaque of boldly carved lion rampant. Graffito on kneeler of a lozenge, worn date (1624?) and initials HC. Interior: originally of only 2 large rooms on each floor. Modern hall has pine dogleg stair. Room to right has dado with fielded panels. Room to left has massive unmoulded ceiling beams, also found upstairs. Modern fireplaces throughout. Several early 3-board doors, now papered over.
