3/18 Gates and gate piers to Wilderness garden at north end of lime avenue of Adlington Hall. 14/4/1967 GV II
Gates and gate piers: dated 1688 for Thomas Legh V. Ashlar buff gritstone. Piers have channelled rustication and stands on a low moulded plinths. Projecting moulded capstone has a flat top. Between are a pair of wrought iron gates made of closely spaced bars, square in section and pointed at the top. Some scroll work along top rail. Right hand gate contains a smaller door and left hand gate has the inscription IW 1688 on top bar. Gates erected, and lime avenue planted, in celebration of the arrival of William of Orange by a colonel of his militia.
