Description

SJ 98 SW ADLINGTON C.P. MILL LANE (South Side) 3/20 Sundial 10m in front of Shell Cottage at Adlington Hall. GV II Sundial: probably early C18 for John Legh and moved in mid C18. Buff sandstone. Square base has a crude, low domed top with carries a barrel shaped pillar with a bead mould at the top. This has an octagonal copper plate (becoming worn) and a pierced triangular gnomon. The plate has Roman numerals, records the longitude of Adlington and has John Legh's initials. It is thought that the pillar is a Saxon cross base and another was moved from here to the Mount in Prestbury (q.v.). Listing NGR: SJ9052980266
